Ike Colburn's 339 E. Foster Place Fundraiser
About this Event
Join us for a rare behind-the-scenes tour of this remarkable Japanese-inspired residence, designed by architect I.W. Colburn in 1960 for railroad investor Robert C. Reed.
In 2014, the house faced the threat of demolition. It was rescued by its current preservation-minded owner, who previously restored Howard Van Doren Shaw's 1897 Little Orchard on Mayflower Road in Lake Forest. Working with architect Bill Massey, the owner thoughtfully updated the interior and designed a new garage that complements Colburn's original vision.
In 2016, the former garage was transformed into a guest house, and—just as Colburn had envisioned in his original plans—a breezeway was constructed to connect the two pavilions. Throughout the project, original building materials were carefully salvaged and repurposed.
This exceptional renovation beautifully demonstrates how a historic modernist home can be sensitively adapted for contemporary living while preserving its architectural integrity. In recognition of this outstanding achievement, the residence received the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation's 2017 Preservation Award for Rehabilitation.
Space is limited to 50 guests. Heavy hors d'oeuvres, wine and a Mid Century Modern specialty cocktail will be served.
