About this Event
Etty Hillesum was a young Jewish woman living under Nazi occupation in Amsterdam who chose, against every pressure, to remain inwardly free. Through her diaries she left behind a remarkable map of the interior life: a way of sitting with fear, violence, and uncertainty without being consumed by them. This retreat invites you to walk that map with her, and to ask what her wisdom might offer you today.
Your guide for the day is Christopher Chapman, an experienced spiritual director, retreat leader, and author of four books on prayer and the interior life, including Seeing in the Dark and Doorways to Hope.
During the day you will:
- Be introduced to Etty Hillesum's life, diaries, and inner journey
- Reflect on her practice of dialogue, with herself, with God, with the violence around her
- Explore what her "way of open hands" might mean for your own life and relationships
- Have space for personal quiet, guided prayer, and gentle group sharing
This is for you if:
- You're searching for a way to stay grounded when life feels difficult or the world feels divided
- You're drawn to contemplative prayer and want a structured day to go deeper
- You're curious about Etty Hillesum, Ignatian spirituality, or both — but new to either
No prior experience of retreats or Ignatian prayer is needed. You may want to bring a notebook, but there's nothing to prepare in advance.
Doors open at 10:15. The day runs from 10:30 and closes by 4:30. Refreshments are included during the day.
