Join Goodwood Museum & Gardens for a Lunch & Learn with staff member Ashley Hunter.Throughout the 19th century, flowers were used to pass secret messages between individuals. Ranging from love notes or declarations of despisal, flowers and their bouquets served as a discreet way to make clandestine statements...and is a language that many Victorian ladies and gentlemen would have understood.
Today, the language of flowers (floriography) is mostly forgotten...but we find ourselves unintentionally copying those secret messages in our own modern bouquets.
Why are red roses considered more romantic than yellow?
Why is baby's breath often included in wedding bouquets?
Why do we decorate with white lilies in Spring?
Ashley Hunter will explore the hidden meanings behind flowers, the secret intentions a bouquet can indicate, and ways to incorporate floriography in your own giving of flowers.
There will be an opportunity for hands-on engagement to play with your own floriography messages just in time for Valentine's Day!
This is a brown-bag luncheon.
Attendees are encouraged to provide a $5 donation at the door.
