Idols through the Decades: 60 Years of Japanese Idol Music
What makes an idol an idol?
Join Ongaku Kissa HTX at Boba & Broth for a guided listening session exploring more than 60 years of Japanese idol music and culture, from the heartthrobs and pop stars of the Shōwa era to the groups redefining what an idol can be today.
We’ll listen to music from original Japanese pressings, flip through vintage album artwork, posters and inserts, and hear the stories behind the music: rivalries, scandals, changing fan culture, and some of the personalities who shaped Japan’s idol industry.
And some of what you’ll hear isn’t available on Spotify.
No knowledge of Japanese music—or Japanese language—is required. Come curious, grab some boba or dinner, and listen!
👑 Who’s your oshi?
In Japanese fan culture, your oshi (推し) is your favorite—the artist or group you’re rooting for. Oshimen (推しメン) is commonly used for your favorite member of a group.
Throughout the evening, you’ll get to choose your favorites across the decades and cast your final vote for Houston’s Top Oshi.
