About this Event

The last in our curated workshop series “Identifying Fabrics” - designed to empower you with the knowledge to confidently understand the clothes you wear for a more sustainable wardrobe - all about knits!

Learn with the FABSCRAP community as we practice unraveling knits and the basic of knitting!

Join us for “Identifying Fabrics” - a three-part hands-on workshop series designed to empower you with the knowledge to confidently understand the clothes you wear for a more sustainable wardrobe.

The workshop will start with an engaging and hands-on discussion about knit types. During which, attendees will learn how to unravel knitted garments and distinguishing identifiers of various knit types. Then, they will learn and practice the basics of how to knit using FABSCRAP yarn! The workshop will end with communal skills and resource sharing. Throughout, attendees are encouraged to add to their “Fabric Identification Journals” to complete the 3-part series.

Light food & refreshments provided. FABSCRAP’s shop will be open until 7:30 too!

Attendees will:

  • Gain a better understanding of knit fabric and identification practices for various types
  • Learn the basics of how to knit and unravel knitted garments
  • Explore the art of knitting and how fabric structure impacts sustainability, durability, breathability, and care

Overview:

Over three hands-on sessions, we’ll dive into the essentials of fabric identification - fiber, weave, & knit - helping our community make informed choices whether you’re thrifting, making, caring for, swapping, or repairing your wardrobe. Perfect for anyone building a sustainable, thoughtful closet, this series will teach you skills that last a lifetime.

  1. Fibers (January 6th) – Learn to distinguish natural, synthetic, and blended fibers and understand their unique properties.
  2. Weaving (February 3rd) – Explore the art of weaving, various weave types, and how fabric structures impact sustainability.
  3. Knitting (March 3rd)

Whether you’re a sustainable maker, repair enthusiast, or simply curious about what makes your favorite pieces tick, this series is your key to understanding fabrics like never before. As a circular fashion leader, FABSCRAP is taking a much needed step to enrich and expand our passionate community of changemakers! Come curious, leave inspired.

Background: Fiber is the raw material—like cotton, silk, or polyester—but the knit is how fibers are looped together to create fabric, and different knit types give fabrics their unique stretch and texture. For example, jersey knit makes your T-shirts soft and flexible, while rib knit adds that stretchy snugness to cuffs and collars. Then there’s interlock knit, which is smooth and sturdy, perfect for leggings or dresses.

Run of Show:

6:00 - Check in & create journal

6:10 - Fireside Chat with FABSCRAP & Hekima/Black Girls Sew

6:30 - Hands-on Large Instruction (Small group & 1:1)

7:30 - Identification Recap & Community Sharing
