Overview:
Over three hands-on sessions, we’ll dive into the essentials of fabric identification - fiber, weave, & knit - helping our community make informed choices whether you’re thrifting, making, caring for, swapping, or repairing your wardrobe. Perfect for anyone building a sustainable, thoughtful closet, this series will teach you skills that last a lifetime.
- Fibers (January 6th) – Learn to distinguish natural, synthetic, and blended fibers and understand their unique properties.
- Weaving (February 3rd) – Explore the art of weaving, various weave types, and how fabric structures impact sustainability.
- Knitting (March 3rd)
Whether you’re a sustainable maker, repair enthusiast, or simply curious about what makes your favorite pieces tick, this series is your key to understanding fabrics like never before. As a circular fashion leader, FABSCRAP is taking a much needed step to enrich and expand our passionate community of changemakers! Come curious, leave inspired.
Background: Fiber is the raw material—like cotton, silk, or polyester—but the knit is how fibers are looped together to create fabric, and different knit types give fabrics their unique stretch and texture. For example, jersey knit makes your T-shirts soft and flexible, while rib knit adds that stretchy snugness to cuffs and collars. Then there’s interlock knit, which is smooth and sturdy, perfect for leggings or dresses.
