Ideas to Impact: 45 Years of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Association

The documentary tells the story of how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of equality, justice, and community empowerment took root in Western North Carolina. Through archival photographs, historical footage, and personal stories, Ideas to Impact highlights the people, partnerships, and vision that transformed those ideals into action through the Martin Luther King Jr. Association’s 45-year legacy of service, leadership, and community engagement.
The evening will open with a brief introduction connecting the work of the Martin Luther King Jr. Association to the values reflected in Wilma Dykeman’s life and legacy, including education, civic engagement, social responsibility, and the importance of community dialogue.
“This film reminds us that lasting change begins with people who are willing to serve their communities and work together,” said Jim Stokely of the Wilma Dykeman Legacy. “The Martin Luther King Jr. Association has spent 45 years turning vision into action, and we are honored to share that story with the community.”
Following the screening, Aisha Adams and Rafrica Adams will participate in a question-and-answer session exploring the making of the documentary, the history of the Martin Luther King Jr. Association, and the importance of preserving stories of community leadership and service. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in a conversation about the continuing relevance of Dr. King’s vision in Western North Carolina.
Jonathan McCoy of the Wilma Dykeman Legacy will serve as emcee for the evening.
Mountain Strong: Continuing the Conversation is a Wilma Dykeman Legacy program series that brings people together to explore the individuals, organizations, and events that have shaped Western North Carolina through films, presentations, and community conversations.
