About this Event
Emily Greenberg is a media artist, filmmaker, and writer whose work examines the fictions we mistake for realities and the realities we mistake for fictions. Her work has shown at the Sie Film Center, Screener Short Films, SIGGRAPH, ISEA, Columbus International Film & Animation Festival, The New Film Underground, The Comeback Festival, and Festival ECRA. She holds an MFA from UC San Diego.
In Deep Drew, a surprisingly philosophical and vulnerable deep fake of Drew Barrymore confronts her own complicities and traumas while reflecting on the harms generative AI poses to writers, actors, and one’s own sense of self.
Fulfillment of a Wish tells the story of how Sigmund Freud arrived at his theory of the dream as a form of wish-fulfillment. In pairing this story with animated imagery from a deep learning text-to-image model, the work suggests that generative AI imagery may also be the “disguised fulfillment of a suppressed, repressed wish.”
Filmed almost entirely in Google Earth, On Exactitude in Science is a three-part video work melding fact and fiction, archive and allegory into a speculative documentary about the rise of digital mapmaking among technology companies.
Acknowledgment: The films in this program received financial support from the Qualcomm Institute, Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts, and the Russell Foundation.
