Coil Tubing Flowline Cleanout Using Subsea Intervention Riser System at a Pipeline End Termination
The P45 flowline was blocked for approximately 10 years, with multiple attempts to hydraulically remediate the pipeline blockage failing. In order to meet BSEE decommissioning requirements, a novel plan to access the pipeline via a PLET with a subsea intervention riser was developed to utilize coil tubing to clean out the flowline.
A subsea intervention riser system was modified to (1) facilitate coil tubing access to the flowline to remediate the blockage (2) provide emergency disconnect capability for the MODU. This was developed based on a subsea well intervention system that was being run in the same mobilization as a well at the same drill center, standardizing with existing equipment and procedures wherever possible to enhance safety and efficiency.
The blockage type (hydrate, asphaltene, etc) and location within the flowline were not definitively known, so plans where developed to remediate any potential blockage materials. The BHA was developed to facilitate coil tubing travel thru a 5d PLET bend and over 10,000 ft horizontally thru the flowline.
The flowline blockage was successfully remediated with coil tubing and the pipeline was flushed to seawater to support regulatory decommissioning.
Utilizing a subsea intervention riser was effective and provided marked risk reduction versus recovering the PLET to surface to rig up coil tubing, specifically providing enhanced emergency disconnect ability in the event of a rig loss of position or power (black out / drive off).
