The weekend of August 28th, 29th, & 30th, Hoosiers across Indiana are rising in a powerful, unified public witness to end the crisis of ICE detention at Miami Correctional Facility. Right now, our state is holding approximately 600 ICE detainees inside this state-run, maximum-security prison with plans to expand to 1,000 beds. While state officials point to a "built-in profit," Indiana is actually losing taxpayer money on a severely understaffed facility where basic medical care is scarce and two detainees have already died this year. Despite political rhetoric focused on "the worst first," the reality is that over 70% of ICE detainees nationwide have no criminal record. Instead, ICE detention means caging hardworking community members, leaving families traumatized and in a desperate scramble for survival.
We cannot put a price tag on the suffering of innocent children, and as an Indiana facility, this injustice belongs to every single one of us. The Indiana Organizing Project is leading the organization of 50+ prayer vigils across our state. We are sounding a moral alarm to demand an end to this unnecessary, cruel system. At this point, “Every detention bed represents a family in crisis.”
Please plan to join Plymouth on August 30th to stand in solidarity with our neighbors and shine a spotlight on the darkness occurring right here in Indiana.
