Iberia of Tomorrow

There is this new reference text that was published in 2023 written by Jon Bonné that winos everywhere have become quite taken with, myself included, called “The New French Wine”. As you would expect, it tells you all about the sea change of winemaking zeitgeists in both the old textbook regions, and what might become the textbook regions in the decades to come.

But ‘The New Wine’ is happening everywhere! It had its growing pains in natty wines, sure. But, by and large, everyone is charting their courses out of that awkward phase, and taking with them important lessons about better viticulture.

For some, that new course is reclaiming “lost” varietals. For others, it’s taking their unloved regions and giving people a reason to love them. For others still, it’s reinventing their old textbook regions so that they don’t just rest on their laurels forever.

Vinho Verde can make serious, non-bubbly wines. Even reds. Rioja can make excellent whites. Castilla y Léon doesn’t have to be a no man’s land catch-all for bulk wines. You get the idea.
