Ian Shaw performs the songs from ‘Greek Street Friday’ (Silent Wish Records) which reflect Ian's lifelong love of people, places and echo the highs and melancholy poetry of city-living. Co-written and produced by Jamie Safir (Will Young, Mica Paris, Birdy, Kylie Minogue) there's a lyrical fearlessness that echoes Bowie, Bernie Taupin, Billy Joel, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell. The music is fresh, bluesy and funky. Safir and Shaw will be joined by a line-up of powerhouse players for this special Festival opening concert.
‘Take me away to where there's music.
Dance me into your night of stars.
Show me the days of sweet romancing.
American Song, young lovers in cars.'
(Say A Prayer For Baby Blue – Shaw/Safir)
With 17 studio albums to his own name in a career spanning three decades, Ian Shaw is also a talented pianist, songwriter, presenter, record producer and actor.
Shaw’s recordings and live performances as a jazz singer have been recognised by two BBC jazz awards (2004 and 2007), a Parliamentary award (2018) and numerous award nominations including Downbeat Magazine (2017) and Jazz FM (2013 and 2019).
For over ten years Ian has presented the weekly Ronnie Scott’s Radio Show on Jazz FM which is syndicated worldwide and has recently added podcasting to his repertoire, with “Not Even Music” now in its third series.
‘an impassioned and versatile artist’ The Guardian
‘Shaw's shape-shifting voice mixes urgency, vulnerability and always humanity’ The Scotsman
Ian’s “smart and soulful show” featuring “the quirks and character tics of everyday living” (The Guardian) will be out in full force at Buxton International Festival
The first single, ‘To Be Held,’ has its title inspired by a Truman Capote interview with Dick Cavett, and which later expands into a beautiful tribute to lost friends, the power of connections, imperfections and navigating the strangeness and beauty of being alive on what Ian describes as ‘this beaten-up planet of ours.’
