Iaedp South Florida Spring CE Event- Showcasing The Interoceptive Self

Presentation Description:

As we move through life, our interoceptive self can perceive and interpret inside our own bodies. “…Winnicott used to say that the mother introduces the baby’s mind to the baby’s body and the baby’s body to the baby’s mind. This [statement] is a metaphor for describing the relational context for the development of an embodied psyche.” – R. Bauer

In this presentation we will explore the necessity of recognizing and opening interoceptive states as they emerge in treatment and create opportunities to develop new pathways to enrich the lives of those suffering from eating disorders and trauma.

Attendees will learn to trust their innate ability to “attend” empathically, respond authentically and translate non-verbal experiences into cognitive insight. Collaborative interactions will include discussion aimed at identifying specific evidence-based practices that can pair with embodied methods to guide clinicians in facilitating meaningful experiences.

Objectives:

1. Identify and explain the importance of integrating interoceptive awareness into the treatment of eating disorders.
2. Explain one embodied technique that will allow interoceptive processes to be accessed.
3. Utilize one UT concept that can be adapted into attendee’s own practice.

About Susan Kleinman:

Susan Kleinman, MA, BC-DMT, NCC, CEDS-S, is a Creative Arts Therapy Supervisor and Dance/Movement Therapist for The Renfrew Center of Florida. Ms. Kleinman is a trustee of the Marian Chace Foundation, Past President of the American Dance Therapy Association, and past Chair of The National Coalition for Creative Arts Therapies. She has published extensively, presented widely, and is the recipient of the American Dance Therapy Association’s 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2014 Spirit of iaedp award. Her work is featured in the documentary entitled Expressing Disorder: Journey to Recovery.

About Dr. Melanie Smith:

Melanie Smith, PhD, LMHC, CEDS-C, is the Director of Training for The Renfrew Center. In this role she is responsible for developing and implementing clinical training and programming that is consistent with emerging research and evidence-based practice. Dr. Smith is co-author of the peer-reviewed treatment manual and patient workbook, The Renfrew Unified Treatment Model for Eating Disorders and Comorbidity published by Oxford University Press. Dr. Smith is a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist and Approved Supervisor and is a Certified Therapist & Trainer of the Unified Protocol for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP).
