I Saw the TV Glow
About this Event
DOORS OPEN: 6:30PM
The Peacock Community Cinema and the Dunfermline Creatives Network are delighted to introduce you to Jane Scheonbrun’s (We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma) stunning A24 film, I Saw the TV Glow.
Recognising Trans-Awareness Week (13th – 19th November 2026), we have selected I Saw the TV Glow to screen alongside a wonderful, and optional, zine-making workshop. The zine-making workshop will take place before the film screening, which will commence at 7:30pm.
Jane Schoenbrun’s second feature film, I Saw the TV Glow, is a horror-inflected yet allegorical journey that explores the power of the media. Set in 1996 and 2006, it is a critique of nostalgia, probing beyond pop culture references – one of the key themes in recent TV shows like Stranger Things. Screening the film in 2026 is a perfect opportunity to turn back time 30 and 20 years.
Young Owen (played by Ian Foreman) discovers his favourite horror and supernatural TV show, The Pink Opaque, in the mid-1990s. When watching the series, he meets Maddy (played memorably by Jack Haven). But, after the show is cancelled, Maddy disappears. Without Maddy, Owen struggles to figure his reality out, and remains dissatisfied. For older Owen in the mid-2000s (now played by Justice Smith), his journey becomes one of self-discovery through popular media and his favourite TV shows. The film delves beneath the surface to address how popular media and TV helps to mediate young lives for those who feel like they don’t fit in.
In The Guardian, Benjamin Lee writes that I Saw the TV Glow is: “a story about what it’s like to be queer or trans, Schoenbrun using both characters to show the devastation of a life unlived”.
If you love Buffy or even Andrew Haigh’s recent and devastating All of Us Strangers, I Saw the TV Glow is certainly a film for you! Join us on Thursday 19th November at the Fire Station Creative, Dunfermline.
