First Parish in Concord played a central role in the life of Ellen Tucker Emerson, the elder daughter of Lidian Jackson and Ralph Waldo Emerson. This presentation will explore the significance of First Parish to Ellen and the joy and satisfaction it brought her; it will also place Ellen’s relationship with First Parish in the context of her deep faith and deep curiosity about the religious practices of others. It takes place the week of Ellen’s birthday, an event the Emersons loved to celebrate.Kate Culkin is a professor of history at Bronx Community College and on the faculty of the Biography and Memoir MA at the City University of New York Graduate School. She is the author of "Emerson’s Daughters: Ellen Tucker Emerson, Edith Emerson Forbes, and Their Family Legacy" (2025).
