Hutted Histories: A Single Suffolk Soldier - Sergeant Donald Dawes in Peace and War

Following a suggestion at a previous Hutted Histories talk, Taff Gillingham is going to tell the story of one individual soldier, from his enlistment in 1910 to his final discharge from the Army, his subsequent time as a member of the Old Contemptibles Association and his death in April 1964.
Don Dawes had an interesting military career, and his war was certainly not typical. His story touches on many unusual places, events and people, including members of his own family.
Don’s experience highlights aspects of the Great War that many of us may not be familiar with, and the talk falls on the 112th Anniversary of the Battle of Le Cateau, which he and his comrades took part in, giving an extra layer of poignancy to the evening.
