Hunger for Justice
This circle is being offered in response to the disruption and decimation of government programs that help address hunger in vulnerable communities. With the loss of SNAP benefits and other cuts to critical human services, many people (especially women and children) are feeling increased food insecurity. Writers will explore the theme of hunger and consider what we can do about the hunger(s) in our communities.
“If I am hunger, that is a material problem; if someone else is hunger, that is a spiritual problem.” —Paul Farmer
“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.” —Mother Teresa
“Hunger is not an issue of charity. It is an issue of justice.” —Jacques Diouf
“The first essential component of social justice is adequate food for all mankind.” —Norman Borlaug
Everyone is hungry, all the time, for something. Hunger for food is growing as deep cuts are made to programs meant to ease food insecurity. Hunger for peace is growing in a time of political divisiveness. Hunger for community is growing in the face of alienation and isolation. What are your personal hungers?
In this circle, we will consider hunger's multiple forms. We will feel the persistent desires that arise from our personal and collective needs. And we will create ideas for addressing our own deep needs and those of our community.
This course is open to all, including Eartha’s patrons and staff, nonprofit workers, farmers/gardeners, and folks interested in the intersection of food and justice. Facilitator: Tru Leverette Hall, certified facilitator for Women Writing for (a) Change.
OFFERING: Please bring one or two non-perishable food items, for those who can give.
VOLUNTEER: Let us know if you’d like to participate in volunteer work at Eartha's in conjunction with this circle
