A symbol of peace and the end to the Cold War, this section of the Berlin Wall was received as a gift from Hudson Counties sister county Oberhavel located just north of Berlin. Oberhavel County in Brandenburgh Germany and Hudson County have been sister counties since 2000 in which the two counties have been involved with student, cultural and sports exchanges. At the direction of Karl-Heinz Schroter, (Oberhavel County Executive) in coordination with Hudson Counties director of “Cultural Affairs and Tourism” Bill LaRosa, this section of Wall was obtained and transported to Hudson County from East Berlin in 2007.
There were many location opportunities as a potential home for this historic piece, but nothing ever materialized until 2024 where it sits today. This section of wall is constructed of steel reinforced concrete and is 11’-9” tall having four 3’-10” wide sections secured together by a masonry tube coping. There are minimal signs of graffiti on this piece because it is believed that this section was not facing the western side of Berlin. There are however signs of bullet holes and weathering due to extended exposure to the elements. During the Cold War the wall was used to obstruct the right of passage, today it acts as a reminder of the value of unity and freedom.
