About this Event
Howard's second talk The Monarch's Way is a sequel to one on the Battle of Worcester, after which Prince Charles, later Charles II, having been soundly defeated, had to flee for his life, a journey of some 625 miles lasting 42 days, going first north to Boscobel (where he famously hid in an oak tree) before then riding south down to Bristol via the Cotswolds; thence on to Lyme on the south coast; across Salisbury Plain; finally procuring a boat near Brighton to take him to France where he lived in exile for 9 years. Along the way he experienced many close shaves riding in the guise of a servant which makes this story such exciting one.
Wine will be on sale, both by the glass for the evening and in bottles to be taken home.
Howard (Robinson), apart from obtaining a degree in Biological Sciences from London University in 1970, has always been interested in History, and the so-called English Civil War in particular. Since he is directly descended from one of its leading protagonists, Oliver Cromwell, retiring to live near Worcester after nearly 40 years as a Head of Biology in two schools, he was very excited to be so close to the scene of the final decisive battle of our Civil War so he could study it in more detail.
