Howard Friedman • Two Fires: Functional Ceramics & Alternative Firings
About this Event
Two Fires showcases the dichotomy of functionality and control vs. trusting the firing process to produce unpredictable, one of a kind decorative surface design.
About Howard Friedman
I'm a physician by training, but clay has been my creative home for over 20 years. I started at the wheel, drawn to the satisfaction of making things people could actually use in their daily lives, bowls, mugs, vessels with a purpose. Over time I found myself reaching for hand building too, which opened up shapes and textures the wheel never could.
These days, what excites me most is letting go of control. For the past five years I've been working with alternative firings, smoke with horsehair and feathers, saggar, raku, obvara, methods that fire at lower temperatures and leave the outcome largely up to chance. Each piece develops its own organic, one-of-a-kind surface as the clay reacts to heat and the materials around it. I never quite know what I'll get until I open the kiln, and that surprise is the whole point. I hope you enjoy the show.
