About this Event
Come enjoy the flavors of ramp season in this collaboration between the Catskill Food Truck and Wild Hudson Valley! Eat ramps, buy ramps, and learn about ramps and many other springtime wild foods. Visit Wild Hudson Valley's table to chat about foraging and ramps stewardship & bring some ramps home to cook up yourself. At 1 PM, we'll gather for a special foraging workshop! Details below.
How to Take A Leek: A Ramp Stewardship and Springtime Foraging Workshop
Join Anna and Justin of Wild Hudson Valley for an introduction to the odoriferous ramp/wild leek (Allium tricoccum) and many wonderful edible and medicinal plants present in our landscape (and perhaps your own backyard!).
We'll wander through Catskill Brewery's property to learn about seasonal edible plants, their history and ecology, how to gather them sustainably, and how to prepare them.
Participants will come away with an understanding of foraging best practices, particularly when it comes to stewarding wild ramp populations, and we'll even taste some foraged snacks! Note that we will not be harvesting substantial quantities of wild foods on this walk, as this event is primarily about sharing a passion for plants and the rich natural world that surrounds us. Be sure to wear close-toed walking shoes and long pants, as we will likely wander off-trail to check out cool plants.
About the Presenters: Justin Wexler and Anna Plattner run Wild Hudson Valley, a forest farm and educational organization focused on Hudson Valley history, ecology, wild foods, and land stewardship practices.
