How to Draw Comics: Visual Storytelling Workshop
In this workshop, students will explore how film and comics use still shots to tell powerful stories. Through a short video and discussion, we will look at how directors and comic artists decide what to show and what to leave out in order to communicate ideas visually.
Instead of focusing on anatomy or detailed drawing, this session focuses on visual storytelling and artistic awareness. Students will learn how to think about what to draw to tell the story they want to tell.
Participants will take part in a group exercise where each person becomes both director and actor, creating a short sequence of frames using photos and quick sketches to tell a simple story.
This workshop encourages students to think about composition, framing, and storytelling in ways that connect to comics, film, animation, and video games.
Materials:
• Phone (for taking photos)
• Pencil or pen
• Sketchbook or paper

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Geof Isherwood's career in illustration spans over 4 decades. Geof drew comics for Marvel and DC in the 80s and 90s, known primarily for Conan the Barbarian, The ‘Nam, Suicide Squad and Dr. Strange. He added film work at the turn of the century. His enjoyment of storytelling led to storyboard work as well as concept art. His primary credits were X-Men: DOFP and Age Of Apocalypse and Scream VI. Geof taught in the Illustration and Concept Art program at Algonquin College in Ottawa over the past decade.
