How to Create an Artistic Reportage

Workshop held entirely in English
A two-day intensive workshop for conceptualising an artistic reportage on the places of conflict within a community. Conflict is understood here in a broad sense as a structural dimension of human relationships and social dynamics, permeating urban spaces, collective memories, and forms of coexistence.
Learning to recognise and read conflict means developing tools for awareness and understanding of the present: identifying tensions while they are still latent allows us to comprehend and defuse them before they become entrenched or evolve into more destructive forms.
What you will learn
Led by Anna Romandash and Robin Alysha Clemens, two professionals with extensive experience working in and around conflict, participants will learn how to:
- approach sensitive topics with an ethical mindset;
- build meaningful dialogue with interviewees;
- ask effective questions and collect testimonies;
- transform real stories into artistic reportage.
Programme
Day 1 — From Testimonies to Narrative
The first day focuses on the ethics of approaching sensitive topics, conducting meaningful interviews, and transforming collected testimonies into compelling journalistic stories.
Day 2 — Journalism as Artistic Practice
The second day explores how artistic practice can change the impact of your story. We’ll work collectively on storytelling ideas beyond traditional reporting formats (photography, immersive installation, visual art, performance and more). Using examples and hands-on exercises, we’ll experiment with different media to show how form influences meaning, and find storytelling approaches that responsibly and ethically tell conflict stories and shape how audiences understand and react.

- Bachelor's and Master's students in Journalism and Digital Media; communication, writing and the visual arts;
- artists and creative practitioners;
- cultural professionals.

Transforming Testimonies into Literary Narratives

Info: The first day develops an observational perspective grounded in listening. Conflict doesn't always announce itself. It lives in hesitations, in what goes unsaid, in the friction between individual memory and collective narrative. Anna introduces participants to interview practices in complex contexts, with particular attention to gathering testimonies in situations of tension. The goal is to recognise the narrative value of collected stories and transform them into vivid, layered material for artistic reportage. Workshop content:
- Introduction to interview techniques in urban and social contexts
- Writing workshop: how to conduct an interview and shape it into a narrative
- Focus on long-form literary reportage techniques

Journalism as art: Finding the Right Medium for Your Story
Host: Robin Alysha Clemens
Info: Building on the work developed on day one, the second day explores how medium, materiality, and form can expand the impact of a story in ways that words alone sometimes cannot. Participants examine real examples where the line between journalism and artistic practice blurs, and explore whether a work can be both journalism and art and how contextualising it can change the audience's perception. The emphasis is ethical: the goal is not to aestheticise conflict but to choose a form that does justice to the story.
We’ll work collectively on storytelling ideas beyond traditional reporting formats: What is the right medium for the story you want to tell? Who is the intended audience and what impact do you want to achieve? Workshop contents:
1) Analysis of examples across formats, impact, and their ethical implications
2) Practical guidance on matching story goals to an appropriate medium
3) Collective work on artistic reportage projects
