Being connected to the local business community can provide much more than another networking opportunity.
About this Event

Networking is often treated like an event.

Show up. Shake some hands. Exchange business cards. Meet a few people. Then get back to work.

But for a small business, being connected to the local business community can provide much more than another networking opportunity.

Strong local relationships can help business owners find resources faster, build credibility in the community, create strategic partnerships, gain a stronger voice on issues affecting their business, and get connected to people and opportunities they may never find on their own.

This month’s featured insight comes from Eric Spoonmore, President and CEO of the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce.

Eric will go beyond traditional networking and break down how small businesses can become more intentional about their involvement in the local business community. He will explain the advocacy work happening behind the scenes for businesses, why being viewed as a strong community partner matters, and how strategic relationships can create real opportunities for growth and collaboration.

The goal is not simply to tell businesses to “network more.” It is to help owners and leaders understand how to use the people, organizations, relationships, and resources already around them more effectively.

Attendees will leave with a better understanding of:

  • How local advocacy affects small businesses, even when owners are not actively involved in it
  • Why community involvement can strengthen reputation, trust, and visibility
  • How to build strategic relationships instead of simply collecting contacts
  • Where organizations like the Chamber fit into the local business ecosystem
  • Practical ways to become more connected and involved in the next 30 days

The education is only one part of the evening.

Each company can also bring a real business issue it is currently facing. The room will build a list, vote on which issue would be most valuable to address, and Jay Nelson will guide the selected issue through Desired Outcome, Current Reality, Root Cause, Options, and Next Action.

The goal is not to completely solve a complicated problem in one session. It is to clarify it, break it down, bring different perspectives into the conversation, and move it toward a practical next step.

The Small Business Working Session is open to owners, managers, employees, advisors, future leaders, and company representatives from local small businesses. Chamber membership is not required to attend.

Whether you need a better connection, a different perspective, a resource you did not know existed, or help working through something inside your own company, the goal is simple:

Connect with local businesspeople. Learn something useful. Work through a real issue. Leave with a clear next step.
