It's time for some workshops! How is your Heart? workshops at Thistle Hall on Sat 1st August and Sunday 2nd August...
Saturday - Art workshops with Sian Quennell Torrington
How is your Heart? The Workshop, will offer you the opportunity to play with ideas and techniques from How is your Heart? yourself, making a piece that you can take away to reflect how you are, just right now. A dynamic workshop using drawing and fast sculpture with materials and methods from my studio, we will create fast, temporary artworks using drawing, collage and assemblage to represent feeling your way through the current times. Playful and experimental, this workshop is open to everyone, from complete beginners to experienced artists.
Sunday - Embodied Dance workshops with Kaia Hawkins of Manahau Embodied Movement. 2 - 4.15 PM - Dress ups and dancing!
On Sunday we find ourselves in creativity with movement. We get to explore the dance of our Pūmanawa, Manawa and Whatumanawa ((3x heart spaces)). 27 sculptures are present to support and inspire. These wearable sculptures by Siân are physical manifestations of feelings that you can try on and move with.
All are welcome ~ come with your water bottle and wear clothes that are comfortable to move in.

Ko wai au?
Siân Quennell Torrington (them/them, she/her, Tangata Tiriti, Welsh, German, Scottish) is an artist who expresses feelings through drawings and sculptures to embody an anti-shame practice that makes what is internal external and visible to others. An ongoing project public art project is ‘How is your Heart’, where audiences put on a wearable sculpture, to express and share without words how they feel in this moment. Holding space and sharing creative processes is part of her practice, enabling conversation, connection, and collective imagination. Siân developed and regularly runs Queer and Trans drawing class, and has run many public workshops addressing social change and wellness through collective creativity. Siân has regularly exhibited nationally and internationally, been awarded two international and one national artist residency, and graduated with an MFA with distinction from Massey University in 2010.

Kaia Hawkins (Ngā Ruahine, Ngāti Pahauwera)
He tuahine, he whaea, he tamāhine, he hoa, he kare ~ Kaia moves at the intersections of decolonisation, embodiment, and collective care. A teacher of movement and unlearning, they work with dance as a practice of remembering ~ of body, whenua, whakapapa, and possibility. Their mahi asks how we compost the old patterns of supremacy and disconnection, and nourish futures rooted in justice, aroha, and belonging. Kaia teaches locally and internationally through Open Floor, Art in Motion and Manāhau Embodied Movement, and offers supervision to teachers and practitioners exploring cultural sensitivity and decolonisation in their work
