About this Event
Share with us! Glendale is starting to develop a garden, with emphasis on native plants and plants that do well in our climate. We have grass and trees and need lots of perennials that are attractive to native bees, birds, other insects and critters. Share YOUR ideas with us to make our 'yard' beautiful, healthy and enjoyable. What do you need to know about making YOUR space more beautiful, healthy and enjoyable? native plants? stunning perennials, birds? butterflies? Join us and let's learn; lets create beautiful gardens.
MEETING SPOT: 4500 25 Avenue SW Calgary, AB T3E 0M1. Meet at Glendale Community Association parking lot, at JW sign. Vehicle entry to association is on 25th Avenue.
WALK NOTES: Uneven terrain, very short walk; we will make it easy for people with mobility issues
YOUR WALK LEADER: Monika Smith, Master Gardener, is a very long-time resident and member of the Glendale Community Association board. She is turning her yard (about half way there) into a native plant and critter paradise. However, she is leaving a few hardy, non-native perennials in place, such as the common lilac, scented peonies (both about 60 years old; you don’t kick those beauties to the curb!) and from her mom’s garden, some wonderful old-fashioned plants in her memory: bergenia, leopard’s bane and primula. Monika is starting to grow food too. She will be collecting seeds, taking cuttings and moving some plants from her yard to the community grounds! She writes a monthly column for the community newsletter: Monika’s Grove.
Elaine Rude is a master gardener, garden designer and instructor. She has worked with the City of Calgary and Calgary Horticultural Society in the Design Your Yard program for many years, has taught numerous workshops and is a frequent speaker at local gardening groups and clubs. Her focus is on creating resilient gardens for people and wildlife that tolerates the extremes of our climate with minimal water and inputs. She also is an avid food grower and encourages people to 'just do it'. Elaine Rude is president of the Master Gardeners Association of Alberta.
***Please note, we ask that folks cancel their tickets through Eventbrite if they can no longer make it to a walk as tickets are limited. This allows folks on the waitlist to take open spots.***
