How Do We Know an Ecology?

Photography, evidence and other ways of knowing the environment with Robert Zhao Renhui, Wang Ruobing, Umberto Diecinove and Mary Ann Lim.
About this Event

Moderated by Mary Ann Lim (Singapore), join artists Robert Zhao Renhui (Singapore), Umberto Diecinove (Italy), and Wang Ruobing (Singapore) as they explore how their practices—spanning field observation, archives, and objects—produce knowledge about the living world.

How do we truly know an environment? While photography often documents nature, ecologies unfold through relationships that frequently escape the camera.

Moving beyond simple representation, this conversation questions what constitutes “ecological evidence.” Can a photograph reveal an ecosystem, or do specimens and chance encounters tell a richer story? Discover how art, when placed alongside scientific knowledge, offers a deeper, relational understanding of the environments we inhabit.
