Please note: This is an in-person event taking place at Good Growth Hub, Hackney, London. There is an option to join online.

We hear the term ‘youth voice’ in arts and cultural organisations, but what does it actually mean? How do you meaningfully engage and incorporate young people into the work you do? How can you avoid youth voice being performative and tokenising?

In this session you will:

  • Learn the core concepts of youth voice and tokenism
  • Understand effective models of youth voice within cultural organisations
  • Hear from industry experts in the field and young people’s lived experiences
  • Reflect upon your aspirations for youth voice in the work you do
  • Share and learn from other culture workers
  • Meet and network with like-minded peers

This Cultural Sector Masterclass session is curated and hosted by A New Direction’s Young Advisors. Jordanne Case, Gabrielle Fullam & Henny Shaw are creatives who consulted on AND’s internal Youth Voice approach & strategy in 2023.

The first half of the event will be a panel discussion. You will hear from speakers:

  • Sid Boyer (Producer, Rising Arts Agency)
  • Lily Dettmer (Creative Engagement Manager, Southbank Centre)
  • Henny Shaw (a multidisciplinary creative, working and exploring the intersections between art and health)
  • Jordanne Case (a London based creative with an interest in shaping community arts engagement & marketing)
  • Gabrielle Fullam (a London-based Irish writer and arts co-ordinator, interested in how socially informed art can build communities)

  • This will be followed by a zine-making workshop where you will:
  • Create your own zine that builds upon your learnings in practical, playful way
  • Develop strategies that embed youth voice into your organisation
  • Build your own manifesto, based on your aspirations for implementing youth voice
  • Visualise your ideas and response to Youth Voice in a creative way.

This event is particularly relevant for anyone who:

  • Works in arts and culture delivery or administration
  • Has an interest in developing youth voice in their organisation
  • Works on creative, arts and culture projects with children and young people
  • Would like to work practically and creatively through this topic
