Matthew Olwell’s work blends traditional and original music, songs, and lore from Ireland, Brittany, and the United States. Currently an apprentice "fluthier" at Olwell Flutes (where he is learning the craft of making and repairing transverse wooden flutes from his father and brother, both master instrument makers), Matthew began his professional career touring for nearly a decade with Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, including a run in the original London production of Riverdance. He has been a featured performer and teacher at numerous festivals and camps, including the Dublin Dance Festival, the Augusta Heritage Center, and the Aulnay All Blues Festival in Paris, and for many years co-Directed Good Foot Dance Company with Emily Oleson, where the two created unique pieces of "trad dance theatre." A longtime member of the band Maivish, Matthew’s other work includes CyberTrad, a recording project that blends wooden flute with bass and Beatbox, and of which the Irish Echo writes, “Outstanding... Olwell is an artist with a keen vision.” Whether in performance or in a workshop setting, Matthew brings to life an exciting mix of music, songs, and steps from the Irish tradition and beyond. This solo performance will feature traditional and original music on a selection of wooden and bamboo flutes and other wind instruments, songs and ballads from both sides of the Atlantic, and anecdotes from the fluteshop, grad-school, and life on the road
