This fast-paced, intensive class will go beyond basic soft sand casting. We will explore a variety of techniques, with a focus on rigid-sand and graphite molds, using binders and rubber molds as tools to take sculptural designs, 3D printed objects, and found objects through the hot-glass casting process.
The rigid-sand mold-making technique offers several advantages for both professionals and students: versatility, speed, storage, and scale. Casting demonstrations will introduce a range of alternative techniques, like inclusions, bubbles, torches, and the use of color to finesse the pouring of molten glass.
Students will work with a variety of mold materials, such as wood, graphite, wax, metal, and rubber, to achieve creative surfaces. They will also utilize the hot shop to develop inclusions, punty up large castings, and experiment with sand mold-blown and centrifuge cast sculptures. Experimentation is encouraged, with an educated understanding of the limitations of the materials, scale, and annealing process. Discussions will cover the use of cast glass in large-scale sculpture and public art, as well as topics like annealing, finishing techniques, paints, patinas, gold leaf, adhesives, and an overview of basic grinding and polishing methods.
Students will be encouraged to explore both the interior and exterior beauty of hot-cast glass, and how to make the magic happen. Please note that annealing times may vary for some works, and shipping arrangements for completed projects may need to be made. All skill levels are welcome.
This class is fully enrolled but does not have a waitlist. Students that gained a spot in the March 15 lottery will have until May 1 to confirm their spot or withdraw. We are filling any new openings by waitlist. New applications will be added to the waitlist. For more information, please contact The Studio at +1 607.438.5100
