We head to Marlborough first for a short stop before heading off to Kintbury at approx. 1.00pm to catch the boat.
The Kennet Horse Boat Company was established in 1970 and is a small, family run business. Painted in the traditional rose and castle style and an important part of England’s heritage, the horse drawn barge offers the chance to step back in time and savour the peace and tranquillity in an otherwise hectic world. She is also one of the few remaining horse drawn barges in the UK. Known as ‘Kennet Valley’ she is based in the picturesque village of Kintbury in Berkshire.
The Horses:
Adults and children alike adore the cross-Shire horses, Monty and Drummer, who are the pride and symbol of the business. They share the work load, alternating their days and enjoying all the attention they get!
The Boat:
The horse drawn barge ‘Kennet Valley’ is powered solely by the horse, which pulls her with no engine on board.
There is a well-stocked bar serving tea, coffee, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages & confectionary, plus all weather protection & small gift shop (please note costs of these are not included in price and will need to be paid for by the individual on board). There is also a toilet on board.
The Kennet and Avon Canal
The Queen reopened the Kennet and Avon Canal in 1990, after it had been extensively cleared and refurbished by dedicated waterway enthusiasts and local volunteers. It runs through what is often spectacular scenery for 140km (87 miles) between the Thames at Reading and the Avon at Bristol. The canal section is 92km (57 mile) long and was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Avon and Kennet rivers.
The boat trip is 2.5 hours long
