THE VIETNAM DONUT DOLLIES' LEGACY

During the Vietnam War, Donut Dollies—American Red Cross volunteers—traveled into combat zones to provide troops with a momentary reprieve from war. Their presence boosted morale, provided critical psychological support, and created lasting connections. Three women gave their lives in service, and one was awarded the Purple Heart. Their stories continue to inspire and deserve national recognition.

As American Red Cross President Gail J. McGovern said:

"The Donut Dollies spent countless hours traveling by jeep, truck, boat, and helicopter to often remote bases throughout South Vietnam, and they were subject to the same sniper fire, mortars, and rocket attacks as service members. Yet through all the dangers and hardships they faced, these young women remained calm, courageous, and respectful of the military situation. They proved themselves brave, strong, and compassionate – and their exemplary efforts in a war zone undoubtedly helped to open doors and expand the scope of women’s roles in the military."

PRESERVE YOUR LEGACY AT THE MILITARY WOMEN'S MEMORIAL

The Military Women’s Memorial is a national memorial and education center dedicated to honoring all women who have served and are serving our nation. We recognize and preserve the service, stories, experiences, and contributions of all women – living and deceased, past, present, and future, who support and defend our Nation.

Many women—driven by a desire to serve their country despite limited opportunities—stepped forward in various capacities (Red Cross, USO, Cadet Nurse Corps, to name a few) during times of war when their support was needed most. The Military Women’s Memorial proudly honors these women under the banner of “We Also Served,” ensuring their stories of service, sacrifice, and dedication are preserved and recognized at the Memorial.

The Military Women’s Memorial is proud to honor and recognize the American Red Cross Donut Dollies and encourages all Donut Dollies to take their rightful place in history by registering their story of service to be included in the Military Women’s Memorial National Register.

Share your personal stories to ensure they are preserved as a visible and enduring part of our nation’s history. To register your story - https://womensmemorial.org/make-herstory/

Without your story, our nation’s history is incomplete.

Located at the ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, the Military Women’s Memorial is the nation’s only major memorial and education center dedicated to honoring and preserving the stories of all women who have served—past and present. Since the American Revolution, more than 3 million women have worn the uniform, yet their stories often remain untold.

Furthermore, many women—driven by a desire to serve their country despite limited opportunities—stepped forward in various capacities (Red Cross, USO, Cadet Nurse Corps, to name a few) during times of war when their support was needed most. The Military Women’s Memorial proudly honors these women under the banner of “We Also Served,” ensuring their stories of service, sacrifice, and dedication are preserved and recognized at the Memorial.

For over 25 years, the Memorial has been committed to illuminating the stories of women's service through powerful exhibits, world-class collections, and meaningful programs. By preserving these legacies and making them accessible to all, we aim to educate the public and inspire future generations—empowering our youth to lead, serve, and break barriers of their own.
