About this Event

Come explore the rich history of Black creators and makers, from past to present, and how their innovations have shaped culture, art, technology, and society.

We will dive into the legacies of historical Black figures who were pioneers in various fields—artists, inventors, architects, musicians, and more—while also exploring the vibrant possibilities of Afrofuturism as a lens for envisioning a powerful future.

Afrofuturism blends elements of science fiction, African heritage, and liberation narratives, imagining futures where Black people are empowered, innovative, and at the forefront of technological and cultural advancement. Through the exploration of Black makers and the vision of Afrofuturism, educators will gain strategies for incorporating the stories of Black creators into their curriculum, while fostering a forward-thinking, inclusive learning environment for their students.

Key Workshop Elements:

  • Celebrate the contributions of Black creators & innovators
  • Develop an understanding of Afrofuturism
  • Design a learning experience that incorporates Black creators &/or Afrofuturism into your curriculum or work

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is open to educators at all grade levels, TK-adult, in school & out of school program providers + community members—who are interested in celebrating and highlighting the genius, creativity, and contributions of Black Creators and Makers throughout history, while inspiring students to imagine their own roles in shaping the future.

Whether you're an art teacher, STEM educator, humanities instructor, or after school provider, this workshop will provide you with tools, resources, and inspiration for incorporating the themes of Afrofuturism and the work of Black Makers into your classroom in meaningful ways.

No prior knowledge of Afrofuturism is required—just bring your enthusiasm and commitment to honoring the legacy of Black Creators and inspiring future generations of innovators.
