Hagood Mill Historic Site is excited to host Homestead Day Camp for Adults on Saturday, April 12, 2025! This hands-on, immersive experience is designed for those eager to explore the art of homesteading through four engaging workshops: Blacksmithing for the Homestead, Cooking with Fire, Foraging for Wild Edibles, and Canning for Preservation.
Campers will rotate through all four workshops, spending 80 minutes in each session under the guidance of expert instructors. This is an incredible opportunity to learn practical skills, connect with history, and embrace self-sufficiency in a fun and educational setting.

Workshop Descriptions:
🔨 Blacksmithing for the Homestead – Instructor: Kevin Thompson
Learn the essential blacksmithing skills needed for homesteading, including forging tools and hardware necessary for self-sufficient living. Kevin Thompson, a master blacksmith with over 25 years of experience, will guide you through traditional techniques in a historic setting.
🔥 Cooking with Fire – Instructor: Eric Adema
Discover the art of cooking over an open flame! This workshop covers various fire-based cooking methods, including constructing a Native American-style backwoods smoker for curing meats. You’ll also prepare traditional South Carolina dishes in cast iron over a campfire. Get ready to sample fresh biscuits, Johnny Cakes, Chicken Bog, and Smoked Trout as a reward for your hard work!
🌱 Foraging for Wild Edibles – Instructor: Donna Putney
Learn how to identify and harvest wild, edible plants that grow all around us! Donna Putney will introduce you to nature’s hidden pantry, teaching you how to make teas and meals from common "weeds" that promote a healthier lifestyle.
🥫 Canning for Preservation – Instructor: Pamela Smith
Preserve your harvest with traditional canning techniques! Pamela Smith, Hagood Mill’s Mercantile Manager and a seasoned caterer, will walk you through the step-by-step process of canning fruits and vegetables, ensuring you can enjoy homegrown produce year-round.
