St. Brigid was a link between pagan and Christian Ireland, and she is celebrated as the patron saint of poetry, learning, healing, metalwork, and domestic animals. Candlemas commemorates the day the baby Jesus was presented in the temple, and it is a day when candles from home are blessed in the church so that we may remember Jesus, the light of the world.
How can a medieval saint, St. Brigid, who served as a bridge between pagan and Christian Ireland, inspire us today? And what might Candlemas—when people bless candles to commemorate Jesus’s presentation in the temple—mean for us in our days of electric lights? As we learn about and discuss the way these holidays are celebrated, we will consider what inspiration they will provide us for these late-winter days, and we will do a simple craft to help us remember what we discover.
You are invited to bring a candle to bless if you wish.
