In The Book of Occasional Services, the service of Tenebrae is described as evoking "an extended meditation on, and a prelude to, the events in our Lord’s life between the Last Supper and the Resurrection."Tenebrae (from the Latin meaning darkness or shadows), is a service prayed in darkness and flickering candlelight. Along with the chanting of verses from The Lamentations of Jeremiah, Tenebrae weaves its narrative out of psalms, readings, and the gradual extinguishing of candles.
For many people Tenebrae powerfully witnesses to Christ in the tomb, the devastation of loss, and the restoration of hope.
