History Behind the Quilt:
A holobiont is an individual with multiple organisms existing with it in symbiosis. Lichen, corals and human beings are well studied examples of holoboints. Ebenezer Galluzzo has taken the symbolism of a holoboint and applied it to the creation of a community-themed quilt.
In 2023 the Holoboint Quilt began in Portland, OR, as an expression of solidarity and support for queer and trans individuals. The themes of community, vitality, and relationship are present in all quilting bees and this one, uses a traditional art form while emphasizing contemporary queer and trans people's contributions to society.
The ways that queer and trans relationships form, often creating loving communities through chosen families, reflect the nature of a holobiont. Anti-trans and homophobic rhetoric has argued that our existence is contrary to nature; using holobiont relationships to symbolize how queer/trans existence benefits the larger ecosystem is one way to counteract that rhetoric. These themes of community, vitality, and relationships are reflected in the ongoing creation of the community made, Holoboint Quilt. This quilt was started in 2023 in Portland, OR and feature the hands of various trans individuals from the area alongside images of lichen. The quilt began being with the loving hands of those from the local queer and trans community as well as allies. We welcome everyone to add thier stitches to the Holoboint quilt, continuing the support and celebration of trans indidvudals and the vibrant ecosystems we create!

About the Instructor:
The visual image has a great impact on how people view themselves and the world around them. Ebenezer Galluzzo’s self-portraits make space to reclaim the lens through which he sees gender. He is driven by his experience as a trans man, the symbology associated with traditional westernized gender, and redefining those gender systems through photography.
