ORAL SPELLING BEE RULES
1. The pronouncer will say the word.
2. Spellers are allowed to repeat the word.
3. Spellers are allowed to ask for a sentence and/or a definition.
4. Spellers will be allowed three seconds to start spelling the word. If they cannot start their word in three seconds, they will be finished with that round.
5. Spellers will receive one chance to correctly spell each word. If the speller starts over, each letter already given must be stated again in the order given the first time.

Example:
Pronouncer: The word is “orange.”
Speller: Orange. O-R-E. May I try again?
Pronouncer: Yes. The word is “orange.”
Speller: Orange. O-R-A-N-G-E.

Pronouncer: I’m sorry. The letters of the word must be in the order you already stated.
The speller will sit out further rounds in his or her group. A round is when all spellers still in the competition have spelled or attempted to spell their assigned word.

6. Spellers will participate in groups. Each group of spellers will spell in rounds. Each speller will spell an assigned word until there is one speller left. When the 2nd place speller misses his or her word, the Spelling Bee for that particular group has ended. The speller left will be the first place winner. They will not be assigned another word to spell. The groups will be determined by the judges. Example: At least three students in a group. The preferred grouping is by grades, but depending on the number of participants in each grade group, multiple grades may be represented in a group. The students in a mixed grade group will spell words from their grade group list.

Example. One 1st grader, Two 2nd graders, and One 3rd grader. These students will be grouped together. Each student will receive a word from their own grade spelling word list. The rounds will continue until one student is remaining. A first place trophy will go to the winner of the round, a second place medallion will go to the second place winner of the round, and a third place medallion will go the third place winner of the round. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation. Arrangements will be made for each participant to receive their awards.

We thank you for participating in our very first Spelling Bee. We are excited to have you join us. Good Luck!
