“Have you ever had a Pacific friend?
Yes? No?
Then this is for you.”
Holding the VĀ is an original Pasefika spoken word theatre work created and written by multidisciplinary artist Fulisia Asalemo Tofete.
In the Pasefika, VĀ refers to the sacred relational space between people, place and all things. VĀ is covenant, the space that holds relationships, identity, ancestry and responsibility together. It is the space between parents and children, oceans and homelands, memory and future.
Performed by a dynamic Pasefika ensemble, the show journeys through humor, grief, migration, climate anxiety, family and belonging from a Pacific diaspora perspective. From awkward cultural misunderstandings and intergenerational clashes to the realities of carrying culture across oceans, Holding the VĀ explores the beauty and tension of living between islands and cities, inheritance and survival, alongside intimate solo spoken word pieces.
Blending contemporary spoken word with Pacific storytelling, movement, music and theatrical performance, the work moves between large ensemble moments and intimate storytelling. Audiences are invited into stories that are joyful, uncomfortable, vulnerable and deeply recognizable, navigating family expectations, identity, grief, love and the changing realities of Pasefika life.
Funny, raw and deeply human, Holding the VĀ is a theatrical experience pulsing with Pasefika voice, connection and heart.
