I’m Not Really a Garden Expert, I Just Play One on the Radio

Mike speaks on a wide range of gardening issues – why we need to rethink our attitudes regarding insects, why pesticide is usually the worst response to a garden problem, why weeds always win, why fertilizing is overrated, why a lot of garden design is overrated, why some garden design could help, why expensive plants are easy to K*ll, why there’s no such thing as a native garden yet it’s still important to grow native plants, and why folks sometimes do the weirdest things in the name of gardening - like planting rows of arborvitaes only to watch many of them fail.

In almost 30 years, Mike Nowak has delivered more than 300 presentations about gardening, the environment and green living to garden clubs throughout the region. That’s in addition to his work on Chicago radio, television, live streaming and podcasts on the Intertubes. You can find The Mike Nowak Show on YouTube and other social media platforms. Some of you might remember Mike from WGN Radio or even the local gardening and food TV program, Dig In Chicago. His award-winning column appeared in the Chicagoland Gardening Magazine for 16 years. In 2002 he co-founded the Midwest Ecological Landscape Alliance (MELA), which led the charge for more sustainable landscapes for 15 years. He was an Illinois Master Gardener for 26 years and is still an Openlands TreeKeeper.

Non Members are welcome to come meet the group and attend the presentation. We offer several presentations and field trips throughout the year.
