About this Event

DECEMBER 5 | Foreign Correspondent (1940)
Starring: Joel McCrea, Laraine Day, Herbert Marshall
Propaganda and paranoia on the brink of war.
A lesser-known gem, Foreign Correspondent was Hitchcock’s second Hollywood film and a thrilling blend of spy games and political urgency. With a jaw-dropping plane crash and anti-fascist undercurrents, this timely thriller showcases Hitchcock’s early American voice—bold, brisk, and brimming with invention.
6PM Pre-Show: Vintage Trailers, Clips
7PM Screening + Film Q&A with historians Richard L. Edwards & Steven C. Smith
Historic Camelot Theatre | Palm Springs Cultural Center

Richard L. Edwards is Executive Director of XCITE at UC Riverside. He received his PhD in Film Studies from USC's School of Cinematic Arts. In 2017, Edwards taught a massive online course for the cable network Turner Classic Movies (TCM) called "50 years of Hitchcock" that had 15,000 enrolled students and ran concurrently with a Hitchcock film retrospective on TCM. With Shannon Clute, he co-hosted the long-running and popular podcast entitled "Out of the Past: Investigating Film Noir." He has also co-written a book on film noir, The Maltese Touch of Evil: Film Noir and Potential Criticism, and written several articles on a variety of film topics, including an essay on the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. This Fall he will be the event host for NoirCon 2024, a four day conference dedicated to all things noir, at the Palm Springs Cultural Center from November 7 - November 10, which will include screenings of film noir classics at the Camelot Theatre.
Steven C. Smith is a four-time Emmy-nominated producer and award-winning author who has interviewed many of Alfred Hitchcock’s collaborators. He appears as a film historian in several Hitchcock documentaries, and received the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for his biography of Bernard Herrmann, the composer most associated with Hitchcock. Steven’s over-200 documentaries include collaborations with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Stephen Sondheim, Julie Andrews, Cicely Tyson, Harrison Ford, and Sidney Poitier. He is the author of the award-winning biography “Music by Max Steiner: The Epic Life of Hollywood’s Most Influential Composer.”
