Were there any girl pirates? Of course! Join Jessica Sheppard on March 12th and discover that females have been involved in roles traditionally held by males throughout history- and from all different nationalities. View documentation from newspapers, archival records, novels, sports and movies. This lecture will focus on the strong, powerful, ruthless, and defiant females identifying as pirates. The underlying gender stereotypes and norms of society will be discussed in connection with the pressures placed on females which led to their decisions to become pirates. Come learn the answers to these questions: Who were some of the famous female pirates of long ago? Why would anyone (including girls) want to be a pirate? Why is it hard to find information about female pirate stories? Why was it considered so taboo for females to be at sea?Part of our History on Tap series—join us for an evening of local history, conversation, and craft brews.
Admission: $10 per person / $5 for members
