October is the perfect time to start decorating our homes for the season, but no fall display is complete without a jack-o’-lantern. But have you ever wondered where this tradition comes from? Join us at Isle a la Cache for a short presentation exploring the history of the jack-o’-lantern, from its ancient origins to how it became a beloved Halloween symbol. Afterward, stick around for some hands-on fun. You’ll get the chance to carve your very own jack-o’-lantern — not from a pumpkin, but from the original vegetable used in this tradition: the turnip!
Fee: Free!
Age: Ages 18 or older.
Registration required by Thursday, Oct. 16, by calling 815-722-9301 or online: https://anc.apm.activecommunities.com/fpdwc/activity/search/detail/9764?onlineSiteId=0&from_original_cui=true
Turnips and carving tools will be provided.
Isle a la Cache is an accessible facility. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should submit a request online (https://www.reconnectwithnature.org/americans-with-disabilities-act-information/request-accommodation-inclusion-service/) no later than 48 hours before the program.
