This talk is based on my current book project exploring the physical, psychological, and conceptual ramifications of bordering in works by artists whose practices have engaged with processes of abstraction in Britain since the 1970s. As well as giving an overview of the project, it will focus on a cluster of works made by the sculptor Veronica Ryan.
Catherine Spencer is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Art History, University of St Andrews. Her current book project is titled Abstract Subjects: Art, Borders, and ‘Britain’, and with Amy Tobin and Maryam Ohadi-Hamadani she is co-editing Grassroots Artmaking: Political Struggle and Activist Art in the UK, 1960–Present (forthcoming, Bloomsbury Academic).
