Celebrate Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough’s posthumous book with a special program at the Heinz History Center.

David McCullough (1933–2022) left an enduring mark as one of America’s most beloved storytellers. On Nov. 19, join the History Center for a special program celebrating the publication of his final work, “History Matters: Essays on the Importance of the Past,” featuring a conversation between his daughter, Dorie McCullough Lawson, and History Center President and CEO Andy Masich.
Published by Simon & Schuster, the book is a posthumous collection of essays, many of them never published, that capture McCullough’s timeless voice on the lessons of the past and the enduring values that shape the American story. Edited by McCullough Lawson and longtime collaborator Michael Hill, “History Matters” offers a deeply personal, intimate portrait of one of America’s most admired historians.
A Pittsburgh native, McCullough grew up in Point Breeze, where his father’s stories at the dinner table first sparked his love of history. Over his distinguished career, he brought to life events ranging from the Johnstown Flood to the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, from the American Revolution to the Wright brothers’ first flight. His bestsellers, including “Truman” and “John Adams,” earned him two Pulitzer Prizes, two National Book Awards, and a worldwide readership.
McCullough also left a lasting mark on his hometown. In 2013, the city renamed the 16th Street Bridge over the Allegheny the David McCullough Bridge, just steps from the History Center — a museum he helped build.

Admission is $20 for non-members and $10 for members. The program will be held in the museum’s fifth floor Mueller Center. Copies of “History Matters” will be available for purchase.
