Join us for an evening with award-winning photojournalist Chris Niedenthal in conversation with Dr. Steve Hoelscher. A moderated discussion will accompany a presentation of select photographs, offering a unique opportunity to reflect on the powerful role of photography in documenting and shaping perceptions of social and political change in Eastern Europe.

Author Bio:

Chris Niedenthal is an acclaimed British-Polish photojournalist best known for documenting life behind the Iron Curtain and the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe. Since the 1980s, he has worked as a freelance photographer for Newsweek, Time Magazine, and Der Spiegel, covering Eastern and Central Europe, the Soviet Union, and the Balkans. His 1986 photograph of Hungarian communist leader János Kádár was awarded a World Press Photo prize of the year.

Dr. Steven D. Hoelscher is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Liberal Arts, a Professor in the Department of American Studies, and the Faculty Curator for Photography at the Harry Ransom Center. He is the author and editor of numerous books, most recently Reading Magnum: A Visual Archive of the Modern World (University of Texas Press, 2013). Recognized as a PhotoBook of the Year by American Photo Magazine.
