Hanging on a wall in one of the academic buildings of Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is a handmade quilt depicting scenes that honor the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806 in the area that would become Kansas and Kansas City. Researched and designed by the late Ruth J. Schultz and fellow members of the Grinter Place Quilters Guild, this quilt was showcased in Kansas City, Kansas, at the Bicentennial of that historic expedition.
Presenters Susie Taylor and Diane Pickman will explore the history of that quilt from documentation Ruth Schultz left in the form of a VHS documentary and personal albums of collected and saved information.
Both Susie and Diane are members of the organizations that study the Lewis and Clark historic expedition - the national Lewis and Clark Trail Alliance and the local Missouri-Kansas Riverbend Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail Foundation. In 2025
they presented their findings at the national convention hosted by their local chapter in Kansas City, Missouri, and then did a repeat presentation at KCKCC in the presence of the quilt in early spring of 2026.
Although the quilt is on permanent display at KCKCC, they hope to bring the beauty, uniqueness, and importance of the quilt to you in this presentation today.
