Join us for light refreshments at 10:30 am followed by the presentation at 11:00 am.The Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC)
has its main campus in Kansas City, Kansas and a branch
campus in Leavenworth. Many soldiers and spouses attend
classes at both campuses. So a look at the World War II history
of the college might be very meaningful. This presentation will examine the contributions that KCKCC’s (then known as The JUCO) faculty and students made to the war effort during World War II. This will include actual military service, Homefront activities
and sacrifices endured. If time permits a short discussion of the National World War II electronic registry will ensue. Focus on how to enter your family member who was part of “The Greatest Generation” into the database will be demonstrated.
Commissioned into the US Army in 1972, Joesph Grasela, Jr., served in various assignments in Field Artillery, Logistics and Military Intelligence. He served in the 2nd Armored Division, 2nd Infantry Division and in the 9th Infantry Division. Joe spent 7-1/2 years in Germany during the Cold War. The highlight of his career was having served as the Executive Officer of the 430th Military Intelligence Battalion in Munich Germany. Retiring in 1992 after a final assignment as an instructor in the Department of Joint and Combined Operations at CGSC, Joe attended Emporia
State University where he earned a master's in library science degree. He served as the Reference Librarian for the Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) until his final retirement in July 2016.
Joe is an avid militaria collector and enjoys the hunt for items. His collection includes U-Boat Captain autographs, wartime photographs of German Ace Adolf Galland, Black Sheep Squadron VMF 214 pilot autographs, F-117 Stealth unit patches and any items related to the World War 2 Medal of Honor winner Maynard
“Snuffy” Smith.
For the last several years Joe has attempted to assemble a collection of the crests / distinctive insignia of the United States Army in Vietnam based on the Order of Battle work done by Shelby Stanton. Joe has hoped this will pay tribute to those who served in Vietnam.
