Presbyterians built Sioux City's first church in 1850s. By the 1890s the number of churches had exploded to over 40. Among the new edifices of the 1890s were Richardsonian Romanesque works like St. Thomas Episcopal and St. Joseph Catholic. The early 20th century saw many fresh immigrants to Sioux City with their own beliefs and languages; they too built new buildings for new congregations. This era brought about Sioux City’s first synagogue and churches like St. Casimir Catholic and Mt. Zion Baptist.
Images documenting over a century of religious houses will be featured at History at High Noon: Sioux City Houses of Worship 1870-1940, on Thursday, February 19 beginning at 12:05 p.m., presented by Tom Munson, Archives Manager at the Sioux City Public Museum.
