About this Event

Get ready to travel down the Mother Road in Oklahoma!

After exploring the journey from Chicago to Santa Monica, the Historically Local Speaker Series is turning its spotlight directly onto Oklahoma’s rich, unusual, and flavor-filled Route 66 history.

Presented by Trait Thompson, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Historical Society

How on earth did bicycles, a high-stakes automobile race around the world, Henry Ford’s assembly line, and a Tulsa county commissioner all converge to create the most famous road on Earth? Trait Thompson will weave together these seemingly disparate events into a fascinating narrative showing how Oklahoma found itself at the heart of Route 66's creation.

The Accident That Built an Empire

Presented by Kathy Anderson, Local Historian

Route 66 isn't just about asphalt—it’s about the culture and comfort food that fed millions of travelers. Kathy Anderson will share a glimpse into the origin story of Chicken in the Rough—one of the most iconic dishes in American culinary history. Born right here in Oklahoma City by complete accident, this Route 66 staple blossomed into a million-dollar empire.
