Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council (SPAR) is hosting one of its Historic Springfield TreeWalks focused on Integrated Urban Ecology, an engaging walking tour examining how trees, parks, streets, buildings, and public spaces function together as part of a larger neighborhood ecosystem.
During this outdoor program, participants will walk through the Springfield Historic District while exploring how planning, landscape design, and environmental systems interact to shape the health and livability of urban communities. Led by certified planner and professional landscape architect Daniel Ashworth, Jr., the tour highlights how thoughtful design can connect natural and built environments to support resilient neighborhoods.
Along the route, attendees will observe how tree canopy, street layout, public green spaces, and historic development patterns influence walkability, stormwater flow, urban cooling, and community gathering spaces. Participants will also learn how planning decisions made more than a century ago continue to shape Springfield’s environmental character today.
This tour encourages participants to see the neighborhood as an interconnected system where environmental health, community design, and cultural history are closely linked, offering new perspectives on how cities can grow while maintaining strong relationships with the natural environment.
Each of these 4 tours will feature ASL interpretation.
Funding for this program was provided through a grant from the Florida Humanities with funds from The Mosaic Company. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or The Mosaic Company.
